Harvest Assistant Winemaker
Full-time, seasonal (Harvest Season, approximately 8/20/23-11/1/23)
Job Description:
We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Harvest Assistant Winemaker to join our team at American Wine Project. As a small winery, we prioritize attention to detail, craftsmanship, and a collaborative spirit. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in all aspects of winemaking during the harvest season.
Responsibilities:
Grape Harvest and Sorting:
Participate in the picking and receiving of grapes, ensuring optimal quality and adhering to harvest guidelines.
Assist in sorting, destemming, and crushing grapes as required.
Conduct preliminary analysis of grapes, such as measuring sugar levels and acidity.
Fermentation and Wine Production:
Perform daily pump-overs, punch-downs, and rackings during fermentation.
Monitor fermentation progress, including temperature control and nutrient management.
Maintain detailed records of fermentation activities, additions, and observations.
Assist in cellar operations, including blending, racking, and transferring wine.
Laboratory and Analysis:
Conduct routine lab analyses such as pH, TA, and Brix measurements.
Assist in sampling, monitoring, and interpreting fermentation and wine chemistry.
Help maintain cleanliness and organization of the lab equipment and supplies.
Barrel Management:
Assist in barrel maintenance, including cleaning, filling, and topping.
Monitor and document barrel inventory, cooperage condition, and oak influence.
Collaborate with winemaking team in the selection and blending of barrel-aged wines.
General Cellar Operations:
Maintain a clean and organized cellar environment.
Assist in maintaining cellar equipment, including pumps, hoses, and crushers.
Support general winery activities as needed, including bottling, labeling, and inventory management.
Qualifications:
Previous experience working in a winery or vineyard during harvest is preferred.
Knowledge of winemaking principles, grape varieties, and fermentation processes is preferred.
Familiarity with cellar equipment, including pumps, presses, and filters is preferred.
Ability to work in a physically demanding environment and lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs).
Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with a small team.
Flexibility to work long hours, including weekends and early mornings, during the harvest season.
